Menurutnya, jiwa manusia merupakan realitas tunggal dengan empat keadaan (ahwal/ modes) yang berbeda, seperti intelek (‘aql), jiwa (nafs/soul), hati (qalb/heart), dan ruh (spirit). Keempat keadaan itu masing-masing terlibat dalam kegiatan-kegiatan yang bersifat kognitif, empiris, intuitif dan spiritual. [7]
